Understand NDIS Supports

Sometimes trying to understand an NDIS plan can be confusing – particularly if this is the first funded plan. So Joe has you covered.

NDIS Support Categories

There are 3 support purposes which have 15 support categories:

Core

A support that enables a participant to complete activities of daily living and enables them to work towards their goals and meet their objectives

Capital

An investment, such as assistive technologies, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, funding for capital costs (e.g. pay for Specialist Disability Accommodation)

Capacity Building

A support that enables a participant to build their independence and skills.

How the supports can
assist a participant

To learn more about how the supports in a participant’s NDIS plan can assist them, contact the So Joe where one of the friendly team can provide guidance to get the information you need to get the most out of the plan.

Plan Management Types

All NDIS plans identify a method for how each funded support will be managed, these include, NDIS-Managed Funding, Self-Managed and Plan-Managed.

NDIA Managed

The NDIA pays a participant’s providers directly on their behalf. Only registered providers can be used.

Self Managed

A NDIS participant or their nominated representative is responsible for all the financial processing of their supports and accountable to the supports which have been processed for reimbursement. Once a participant has paid for the supports which have been provided, the NDIA will reimburse them for these supports.

Plan Managed

The NDIA will provide additional funding in a participant’s plan to pay for a Plan Manager who pays providers for the participant, helps keep track of funds and takes care of financial reporting.

Plan Management for everyone

So Joe are Plan Managers who can support participant’s to manage their NDIS funds. Plan Management is a support which is available to every NDIS participant and is fully funded by NDIS – it does not effect the other funding in a participant’s plan.

A participant can ask for it to be included in their plan at their NDIS planning meeting or connect with a So Joe team member to gain a ‘request for Plan Management’ form to provide to the planner

Other NDIS Inclusions

Stated Supports

Any services listed as ‘stated supports’ are not flexible. This means funding has been allocated for a specific support or service, and this funding cannot be used for something else. A participant cannot swap ‘stated supports’ for any other supports.

In-Kind Supports

If there are supports in a participant’s plan that are listed as ‘in-kind’, it means the service has already been paid for by a state, territory or the Australian government agency.

When an in-kind service is used, the existing service provider will deliver the in-kind supports and the participant will not need to pay for the service from their NDIS plan funds. If a participant has a concern about using a specific in-kind provider or service, they can talk to their ECEI Coordinator, LAC or NDIA planner.

Quote Required

Where a support is listed as ‘quote required’ additional information such as quotes and/or specialist reports will be required before funding can be made available in the participant’s NDIS plan.

Transport Allowance

A participant will generally be able to access funding through the NDIS for transport assistance if the participant cannot use public transport without substantial difficulty due to their disability. Funding takes into account any relevant taxi subsidy scheme, and it does not cover transport assistance for carers to transport their family member with a disability for everyday commitments.

Please note this information is related to participant transport arrangements and does not relate to travel for providers of supports as detailed in the Support Cluster Definition and Pricing document on the NDIS website.
